A seedling will never grow past stage 4 if there is a mature tree in any of its eight adjacent tiles.
Tapper trees only require one free space on all sides but things like weeds and fallen seeds will interfere with their growth so you do need to check for that.

Fruit trees require 2 spares in all directions to be clear so they must be planted with 2.

I m not sure if the perimeter of the farm is different but you can plant them in the greenhouse and there the edges of the greenhouse count as empty spaces.
